I think one thing that private space companies could do in the relatively
near future is turn concepts like this (which gets points for being cool
looking and different) into hotels for those who want to really get away
from it all and see and feel something you can't get on the ground -
and if you have enough extra cash laying around, of course.
As with spas in the olden days with hot springs which were advertized
as places to help people feel younger and healthier, these companies
could claim that floating about in "zero gee" will also make you feel
young and alive while you get to view Earth way above all the crowds
and noise of human society. They could also promote other aspects of
being in a microgravity environment, wink wink.
We already know that some rich folks will shell out $20 million for a ride
on a cramped Soyuz spacecraft to spend a week on the ISS, so I would
think that even more people with money would want to spend even
longer in Earth orbit at a real Space Hilton. Presumably if enough people
wanted to do this, it would bring down the prices and eventually even
the "commoners" might one day get to enjoy the Final Frontier.
