As Apollo 7 astronaut William Cunnigham noted in 1977

In his book The All-American Boys, most of the astronauts selected by
NASA were from the Midwestern USA, where folks tend to be a bit less
rebellious and follow orders better (hey, that's what he said).

Armstrong certainly fits that bill. As I said in another recent thread on
the man, while he has certainly maintained the dignity factor of being
the first human on the Moon, Armstrong's lack of visible support for more
ambitious space endeavors may have played at least some part in the
fact that we are not where we should be in space as many thought back
when Apollo 11 was making history.

While I admit to being too lazy to confirm this, a lot of astronauts have
come from Ohio and I do know for a fact that most of the STS-70 crew
were from that state. That mission was mostly noted for the bird that
kept making nests in the external fuel tank and they tried to scare it
away with fake owl statues and balloons that looked like big owl faces.
