Space/Science » in reply to Thoughts on the space program

It's not fair to blame lack of interest on "the people."

People have lives to lead, kids to bring up, livings to earn, problems to solve. But when their imaginations are fired up, interest flares. Personally, I think it's a lack of leadership. We look to leaders to fire our imaginations, our resolve and open our pocketbooks.

The space program has brought us many benefits and inventions. Sometimes people need reminders and to be shown what COULD emanate from a re-invigorated space program.

We can argue all day about where the leadership should come from. Kennedy did it (for political motives--cold war angst). Obama could do it-- once the economy is steaming along again. It usually starts with one person who has a dream and the fire to follow through. If enough people start lighting fires out there, the barriers could be removed.
