And it's completely unrelated to race. No, it's the other thing that separates us into two different groups!
It's not gone unnoticed that the strongest reactions, the most vociferous statements of outrage, from both sides, have nearly all come from...men...not women.
More than a few women of all political persuasions have looked at the various exhibitions of ego, machismo, and uncompromising attitude on the part of officer Crowley, professor Gates, and even President Obama, and just rolled their eyes...
C'mon, let's be honest here...if a woman was trying to fix her door nobody would have ever called in a burglary report to the police, and even if a female officer did come out to the house of a female homeowner, heck, after brief introductions, quick explanations, and mutual polite apologies, they'd probably be having tea together and telling each other stories about their boyfriends, then the policewoman would be helping her fix her door, instead of trying to intimidate each other and show who has the bigger cojones...
I strongly suspect that some of Obama's female advisors told him to de-escalate this whole thing, and that's why he called both parties, expressed his regrets for a poor choice of words, and actually commended and complimented the police officer for his overall outstanding service record.
Another very different, and somewhat amusing, angle to the Gates controversy
