After getting rid of Norton (one of the best things I have ever done) I switched to AVG subscription version. It was a huge improvement over Norton but afer a year or two little glitches became bothersome to me. About that time MSN started offering a complete McAfee program and a pretty good spyware program called Webroot. Since I have maintained a cheap dial-up membership with MSN for years I decided to try McAfee.
Seemed okay for a while but I soon began to notice memory resource problems. Sometimes start-up programs did not load and sometimes when they did load they didn't show up in the tray.
I decided to dump McAfee and use the totally free Avast home edition. So far it is great. With my cable connection, internet sites load in 5 seconds vs 10 or more with McAfee. I no longer have any memory resource problems and the performance of my nearly 5 year old pc has not been better, at least in the last couple of years.
I recommend Avast but if anyone has any negative feedback, I'd like to hear it.
