Life sustaining is one thing and it is short lived by present standards. Although, many life-sustaining methods have been tested on Sky Lab, Mir and ISS.
Along with technology what is lacking is the speed to get there and that would be helpful. The VASIMR concept has not been tested as far as I know (anyone?). It seems to hold promise, however.
Couple speed with the means and sure, we could go places.
