Individual insurance and maternity

On the subject of moving to an individual insurance market, and presumably pricing based on individual and not community risk assessments. Here's an interesting question: what do you do with pregnancy? Since you choose to give birth, insurers writing individual policies generally exclude it, and if they will cover it at all, charge extremely high maternity riders (e.g., $1000/mo) and even then sill often cap benefits to low amounts (like a few thousand per pregnancy). FYI, average birth cost these days is about $8,000, and obviously that spirals up if complications ocurr. Yes, you could do childbirth at home to save money, but if it goes badly and you end up rushed to the ER, that care would not be covered -- the plans typically exclude anything and everything related to the pregnancy, gestational diabetes to life-threatening bleeding after delivery, or neo-natal care of the fetus.

This totally makes sense from an insurance standpoint, though being both a guy and on a group plan, I'd never really thought about it. Anyway, you don't insure against things that people can do to themselves deliberately. So what do you do with maternity coverage at an individual level?
