It has been repeatedly stated for more than 10 years, that we'd be offered a referendum on joining the Euro.
It's never happened. And it's easy to see why - it would get a no vote. Probably in the 60/40 range.
Britain just isn't European enough. We're far far more British than European, compared to those 'on the continent'. We really REALLY are an island. The channel might as well be 20,000 miles rather than 20.
And for what it's worth - the pound, against both the Dollar and the Euro - was idiotically over-valued about 18 months ago. I got >$2 to the £1 last June. It was laughable. Ditto the Euro - it was at 1.5. Pure madness. I went to Dublin in February, and a Euro cost me MORE than a pound. When I got dollars to go to LA in March, it was not the $1.90+ I got in 2008, but barely $1.30.
Where the two currencies actually belong, is between the madness that we used to have, and the madness we have now - $1.50 and E1.30
We can't join the Euro now - the currency is undervalued. Were a referendum to come, I would vote no. As a culture, an economy and a nation - we're the odd-one-out in Europe.
