Has nothing to do with overseas shipping but,

I have noticed unusually high shipping costs for certain items, particularly used books that they advertise for very low prices.

I think that is some cases part of the shipping & handling costs are rebated to the shipper. I suppose this can be partly justifed by the packaging and handling they do, but I suspect that there is some profit in there for the shipper.
