Excellent book on tribal conflict is "War Before Civilization". Not an encouraging read about human nature, although it also describes the extremely rare cases of non-violent tribes, and how tribal wars are resolved short of genocide (with great difficulty).
Who knows what aliens are like, but if their evolution is based on natural selection, there has to be some aggression going on. Even bonobos can get aggressive to protect territories.
