You maximize in-city mileage with your electric car, and drive longer distances on gas or plug-in hybrid. Or you use zipcar for long one-day drives, or rent a gas car for weekend or longer trips.
Lots of ways to skin this cat. They won't work for everyone, but they can work for a lot.
