Again too literal a reading of history, hank.
Sure, the Nazis were always snappy dressers, and had the best haircuts. The clip from Cabaret depicts some powerful propaganda for the times--militant folks songs were Goebbels' state of the art, attractive to a 1930s German, but it falls flat to the modern ear. Too clumsy, to people who've experienced another 2/3 century of weaponized media.
The most fundamental change I see is that propaganda, or at least full-throated political rhetoric, has become the passion of a lot of sophisticated people. People who are not only resistant to the blunt-instrument rhetoric of the right, but can create their own counter-propaganda.
Couple of weeks ago, I joined a Women's March for a couple of blocks, and it was inspiring. The best thing about the many Women's Marches are the signs, and the wit as well as the sophistication they display.
And best of all is that there was a large contingent of the youngest women, the preteens and young teens. And they were serious about the issues, judging by the pugnacious yet clever tone of their signs, serious as only little girls can be.
And they'll soon grow up and be able to vote. Joining the millions of women already utterly and irredeemably opposed to the right's fascist/oligarchic agenda.
It's a dangerous fever dream to believe that you can simply run history backward if the present displeases you. Those women won't give up what they've spent half a century fighting for. They won't let time's arrow turn around.
And the Millenials are pissed, too. Opinion surveys consistently say that people under 30 absolutely despise the GOP and their agenda.
Down the page, hank, you called for creation of a Prepper Board on the Zone. I started a response that got lost, about how nah, let's not go to that extreme. And I meant to go on about how, in your desire to hunker down and ride out the apocalypse, you're forgetting that you're not alone, and it's not just us old Baby Boomers at the ramparts. We're not alone in our horror and revulsion toward Trump. There's a solid majority of the country who stand with us, against the fascist right.
It's really not all that much like 1930s Germany, now that I think about it, hank. The public perceptions of Hitler versus Trump are like night and day. I think that will prove the crucial difference.
