In rural Florida, I was brought up with people like that all around me.
The issues, of course, were different, but the attitude was exactly the same. Their psychology is recognizable, and totally familiar to me. These people are scared, insecure, and have convinced themselves (or have been persuaded by their oppressors) that they are superior to others and that those Others are responsible for their insecurity. This is that famous American Exceptionalism you hear so much about. Amerika uber alles.
"Finding common ground" is going to be difficult.
