The coastal migration route is being increasingly favored by anthropologists. Small boats, short hops from cover to cove over time.
The White Sands playa when wet is a nasty gooey mess. And really exposed. I can't think of a reason to walk out on it unless you had to. That's the part that puzzles me. Maybe animals stuck in the wet (literally) plaster?
