I took an economics course in college.
I didn't particularly disagree with my teachers, I just detected in them an unconscious effort to convince not just me, but themselves, that this wasn't "the way things are", but that it was the "way things had to be". Or maybe I should say "this is the way things OUGHT to be".
Marx was very familiar with Adam Smith. He cited him frequently.
