A lot has changed. Staged ignition and ejection charges can be ignited with flight computers which also log all the flight data. The computers have bluetooth and you can read the flight event plots on your phone- in the field. I have a chute release which lets me preset the opening altitude.
I mainly use Estes black powder motors, but the ones for this rocket are ammonium perchlorate composites, just like the solid rocket boosters on the space shuttle. They cost a little more, but they have 3 times the total impulse of the same size Estes motor.
One thing about the rocketeers today, once they start talking about rockets, they never shut up...
