But it doesn't answer the question why a respected, competent scientist suddenly flies off the rails like this.
As an astronomy enthusiast, I have followed the careers of respected scientists who have suddenly been sidelined by unpopular, or otherwise controversial ideas. Think of Halton Arp and Fred Hoyle! But when a suspect starts denouncing that the entire scientific community is rife with orthodoxy and determined to stamp out all creative thinking (like Avi Loeb) my radar detects an atom of bullshit. It sounds too much like MAGA logic too me.
