OK I'm not a microbiologist, but you can't seriously tell me we can't identify single cell life in a microscope? That's something they are designed to do.
And microscopic lifeforms such as protozoa, bacteria, and other microorganisms use appendages like cilia or pseudopods to swim or crawl, hunting bacteria, algae, or other single-celled creatures, which they consume through processes like phagocytosis, where the predator cell engulfs its prey.
As for the funding stuff, it's not conspiracy theory BS. I actually read about this NASA strategy from legit sources over the decades since Viking. There was a 21 year gap in Mars landers between Viking (1976) and Pathfinder (1997), because of the Viking failure to find life. And of course Pathfinder and nothing since has had a mission where looking for actual life was the goal. It's always been looking for the conditions to support life over and over ad nauseam.

- To be fair

- Microscopes are designed to identify EARTH microbes,
- NASA oversold the prospect of life on Mars in the 1970s
- Again, not a conspiracy
