Slavery used to be the accepted norm in human society (it was a feature of More's "Utopia") So was absolute monarchy, rule by inheritance, state control of religion, and complete lack of individual rights.
I don't think most people are aware of just how exceptional modern Western society is.
Just because most countries - or at least their governments - think collectivism is a swell idea doesn't make it one.
