I have tried to ensure the structure is flexible- for instance IF the board grows in scale to the point where it makes sense to subdivide the existing boards- for instance break Science up into sub-groups (Biology, nanotech, Geology... etc) the database structure SHOULD make that easy to do.
Once the board starts to approach a steady state at least SOME of you should be given access to the GitHub repository and create an AI chat with Claude so it can talk you through making changes to the code in the future- Ideally, I can find a way to share the chat I used to create the board, but that is probably not possible. You don't need to be able to code to take over operation and maintenance - you just need to be comfortable working with AI to do code changes- its really quite easy
We should have perhaps a minimum of 2 people aside from myself that can take over operations and maintenance of the board in case I am killed in a laser communications accident... its a dangerous line of work, after all... :)
This board in its various incarnations has persisted for over a quarter of a century... that alone is EXTREMELY RARE. The OG HZ started when I was a struggling grad student before the turn of the millennium- I hope we manage to get the database of the old posts- A lot of history was documented at the zone- I hope that can be resurrected.... I think it has real sociological/historical value...
IF we want the board to keep going we need to bring in new people- I suggest that we spend some time polishing the board, figuring out what features to add, fixing bugs we find... then we can start getting new members- the most natural way to do it is to cite discussions here with links as part of discussions on OTHER discussion boards.
We don't need to renew the domain for about 5 years, and the .net domain was quite cheap- I picked up a few other domains for myself- I am creating an LLC for myself so I can do consulting work if I want... 'Lafon Laser Communications' (L.L.C. LLC, LOL)
