THe protesters. in their placards and literature, have characterized themselves as "the 99%" who are failing to prosper from the financial economy. Presumably, those who are thriving can be considered the "1%".
In TV footage of yesterday's protest, I noticed someone in a Wall Street office building, in a floor high enough to be out of range of brickbats and paving stones, had erected signs in his windows that read "We are the One Percent."
The terminology is inevitably going to catch on, I'm just pre-empting it.
In Vietnam-era military slang, a "one percenter" was slang for a short-timer who did just enough to get by and stay out of trouble, a slacker.
