I've never been able to get into the comic book scene. The whole superhero concept struck me as unworkable, even as a kid.
I enjoyed comics, I particularly liked the horror, science fiction, and war genres, although even as a kid, I knew there was no supernatural, the science was bogus, and war was very differnt from what was depicted in the comics. Still, I have no problem with just being entertained. But as I grew older, the comics just faded. I did have one favorite artist, working in the horror genre, who's style completely captivated me. But I can't remember his name, now. Perhaps you could post a few links to examples, I'm sure he was famous, and I know I'd recognize his work if I saw again.
I bought the first few issues of "Heavy Metal" when it first came out, I especially liked Moebius' style, but I soon lost interest.
As a young man, I was exposed to underground comics, and became a big fan, but I saw them as either political/social propaganda or humour, with only a few exceptions. Shelton, Crumb and Bode are the only ones I can name. The real art was in the superhero arena, the draftsmanship was spectacular and I still have great respect for what those artists are doing--as graphic art. But the story lines just seemed to be more and more bizarre. I simply could not relate to the new heroes and their baroque histories and motivations.
I hope no one takes these comments as a put down, we are all entitled to our guilty pleasures, and I certainly have quite a few of my own: grade B 50s science fiction, Hammer horror classics,
spaghetti westerns, sword and sandal epics, and (until they became so damn common) any melodrama set in outer space. My wife is into Harry Potter, Kung Fu, British mysteries, and slasher flicks. To each his own, we need make no apologies.
But the fantasy world in general, and comics in particular, just doesn't appeal to me, and I have trouble understanding the great appeal they have for so many people. However, I once dated a girl who was an artist's model for one of the Conan the Barbarian graphic novels. She was the kidnapped princess who falls in love with the hero (every man's fantasy, right?). Does that count?
