Let's say a person goes to work with a pair of clean pants. Spills a bit of coffee on them, wipes it up, doesn't show. Much. At lunch a drop of mustard, wiped up, hardly shows. Oops! Mayonnaise. Wipes it up, shows a bit. At dinner some gravy slops on, quickly wiped up, leaving a clear stain.

At some point those pants aren't clean.
