He would befriend them, promise something in the countryside – meeting and dinner with his family, an authentic rural experience, whatever the Westerner wanted.

Then he dropped them off where his accomplices finished the kidnapping.

He was captured by the Indians, sentenced to prison in 1994 and released 1n 1999 as the result of a Indian Airlines hijacking.

The diary is long, fascinating. I'm glad I never met him, can understand the attraction Daniel Pearl felt.
