Re: And another thing

Almost all religions have gone through periods in history that don't look good on their resume, including Christianity. Attempting to eliminate Islam is not only basically genocide, but it just ain't practical.

What needs to be done is to encourage Islam to evolve into a more tolerant religion than can be incorporated into a secular society. I think this is feasible, although no piece of cake. Turkey has gone a long way in this direction, and one only needs to look at history to see a time when Islam was more advanced, and had a greater reputation for tolerance. In the Dark Ages, the Islamic world was not only more scientifically advanced than Europe, but as a religion had greater tolerance for other religions than medieval Christianity. I think from what I have read that they were even less antisemitic than medieval Christianity. If they were there once, they can go there again.

Instead of trying to wipe out an entire religion, what may need to be accomplished is a more specific military defeat of certain militant factions of Islam, much as militant factions of Japan were defeated in WWII without having to annihilate all Japanese or their ancient culture. Visitors to modern Japan would certainly agree that they are now a peaceful society, with all of their religious and cultural virtues largely intact.

This too, would be no piece of cake. WWII certainly wasn't, and we saw what it took to de-fang Japan.

Still, I see no reason that Islam cannot move past its violent aspects. There is nothing in the written religion that demands such violence, although as with Christianity, there are always scriptures that can be used to justify violence.
