Neighbor of mine by the name of Ed Phillips worked the pipeline (not to be confused with the Panama pipeline) a-way up north. He has also be stationed a couple times at Greenland. He VERY retired these days. spends his time writing local history books, fishing, gardening, and telling tales to any who'll listen (he can slways count on me to sit in on a story). He's about 85-years-old.
One of his stories involved Greenland. It reminded me of a joke Ken Curtis (Festis from Gunsmoke) told.
"Cold?! You don't know cold. Why, we had a winter here that went straight through summer! I can recall setting the coffee pot out on the stoop to cool, and it froze so fast, the ice was still steaming!"
Anyway, Ed told me about tossing out a cup of fairly hot coffee -- and watching the brown droplets clatter on the ice and roll away like scattered shot. Of course that story led the way to one about snowplowing a Greenland airstrip with a JATO-strapped DC-9.
Cheers,
Dan
