There is solid evidence to back up the theory that the Mercury News and many leftist, anti-rich points of view originate in regions where money is arrived at often in less than noble means.
While silicon valley has done incredible good for the nation there are not an insignificant amount of free-loaders and con-artists who often themselves get rich and then embrace the socialist philosophy in spirit and word - if not in action.
One might say that many of the wealthy socialists, who have an ample slice of the pie - find it easy to suggest that GM or big business needs to be taxed more. Either it is total hypocrisy - or a total guilt complex that often makes these folks screaming representatives of the far-left. The same guilt/hypocrisy is evidenced in Hollywood.
Barry Goldwater is a hero down here. Millions of folks adore him. Streets are named after him and they are safe, well-lit, crime-free streets, filled with hard-working Americans with common sense.
Strom Thurmond was originally a registered Democrat - that is until the party became a party of sell-outs and charlatans, co-opted by the boot-legging Kennedy clan. (On an aside I thought it took major cajones for the Kennedy clan to promote their sequel to "Profiles in Courage" - a book which John Kennedy did not write a word of, but merely helped to "research".)
Yes, the corrupt well-to-do often turn far-left in their politics. As a matter of fact - you can almost use that as a benchmark as to how honestly or fairly someone came to their millions. It's not absolute but it works about 85% of the time.
