Re: A clinical explanation

<Whether or not you believe in the paranormal may depend entirely on your brain chemistry. People with high levels of dopamine are more likely to find significance in coincidences, and pick out meaning and patterns where there are none.

It may be worse than that. Maybe everybody has this potential. A very basic function of human intelligence is to analyze seemingly unrelated patterns and draw new conclusions. Even our visual centers are constructed with this in mind, taking visual input and snapping patterns into the mind without concious effort.

It's entirely possible that most of our belief in the paranormal--and most religions--are part of the human mind's constant imperative to observe the naturally random and chaotic world and impart order to it--even if the order is not real.

Maybe the dopamine levels have something to do with this, and that "believers" have levels different from others, but it should not go unnoticed that the ability to see patterns where others have missed them is a hallmark of creativity and scientific discovery, and that this syndrome may not be a "bug" but a "feature." More likely, both at the same time, which is true for more than one human condition.

See the dog? How did you see the dog?

A musician or a girl's face? Notice you are completely unable to not see one or the other.
