Re: One tough Canadian!

Cougers have huge territories, around 200 square miles per cat. Just catching a glimpse of one in the wild is nearly impossible. The only instance where a person might happen upon a couger is if the cat was protecting a den, and tending to stick around because of cubs. We had a couger hanging around the house once, and we think it must have had a den nearby. It kept going after our pet cats, but fortunately our cats knew the territory (immediately around the house) better than the couger. One of our cats escaped by running straight down a footpath like a bullet (like greased lightning really!!!) and up and into a hollow stump left by when a 200 year old white pine tree fell. So our cat was inside this hollow tree stump and the couger was pacing around the bottom. Those are BIG animals too. Our other cat knew a very fast way of getting onto the roof of our house. Both our cats live to a very old 18 years, very likely because they were healthy outdoor cats that got a regular diet of mice (the perfect food for cats according to veteranarians), squirrels, and grass.
