Re: The US and Human Rights

I wouldn't sign a document declaring that the sun rose in the East if it came out of the U.N., and Bush should have the same policy.

Oh, yeah, the thugocracy of Kuwait is going to lecture us on the treatment of prisoners.

There are a number of legal reasons that these people are not being treated as POWs, not the least of which is they would have to be eventually repatriated, and unlike the defeated members of organized military troops of bygone wars like the Germans and Japanese, they would not go back to their homes and work, but come right back to try and kill us until they succeeded.

“There are practical issues for Washington, such as how the current treatment of detainees could affect the safety of U.S. personnel captured abroad."

Do you harbor the slightest illusion that how we treat our prisoners--and denying them legal representation in their near-luxury facilities doesn't exactly rank a 10 on the torture scale--would have anything to do with how our troops would be treated if the Al Quaeda captured them? "Oh yes, we should treat this downed pilot well since they have provided our prisoners in Cuba with legal representation." Cripes.

Our shining examples of humanitarianism in the past have done little or nothing to alleviate the barbaric practices of our enemies. Usually they have made us easier to kill.

Gee, maybe if we had treated our captured Viet Cong prisoners better during Viet Nam maybe our POWs wouldn't have been racked up in bamboo cages and tortured.

This has nothing to do with humanitarianism, human rights, or anything else. These people, and the media people pushing them forward, are the usual suspects with the primary goal of wrecking the Bush administration, and the safety of the U.S. comes a distant second.
