George Bush made a lot of promises regarding Iraq prior to 2008.
He was going to destroy Al-Quaeda, crush the Taliban and frustrate Saddam's imminent plans to attack us. He was going to drive a stake into the heart of Islamic Fundamentalism. He would establish a loyal, friendly, strategically placed American puppet state, with American bases, that could instantly threaten any of our enemies, or support any of our friends, in the Mid East. He was going to unleash democracy into the region. He was going to secure our source of oil and break the Arab monopoly and protect the Straits of Hormuz from blockade forever. He was going to have the Iraquis so grateful for their freedom that they would pay the costs of their own occupation. And he would eliminate the growing Iranian threat by intimidating them into submission with his bold geopolitical chess move into their neighborhood. He was going to do this in just a few months, a half-year at most. Oh, and most importantly, he was going to eliminate the WMDs. We dare not forget that one, do we?
Obama only made two promises in 2008, he was going to get out of Iraq and he was going to punish Al-Quaeda. Obama kept both his promises. Bush didn't keep any of his.
The Bush/Cheney invasion of Iraq was an emasculating disaster for our country. It ended the American Century. But shit happens, after all, you can never predict how things will work out, regardless of good intentions.
But the Right Wing's attempt to cover up and justify this fiasco continues to this day, after it is obvious who was responsible and why. That's not just an enormous but honest miscalculation, that is a deliberate rationalization and self-serving prevarication, devised primarily to promote and preserve their reactionary domestic economic policy. It is unforgiveable.
