Re: Ethanol Fuel of the Future

Yep. Iogen Corp has discontinued refinements to their cellulase enzyme technology because they are already able to produce ample quantities of ethanol for the current market. There just isn't enough demand to increase production, there are few vehicles on the road that use ethanol, and there is only one commercial ethanol refuelling station in Canada (just 100 in the USA). No demand, no production.

I notice that General Motors is focusing more on packaging rather than fuel cells. I think they don't consider hydrogen to be a realistic goal (neither do I). They've really developed a more commerically acceptable version of the electric car, technology that usually looks dumb and performs worse. The powerplant seems to be a secondary concern of theirs, and the fact is ethanol fuel cells are more functional for automotive use than hydrogen fuel cells. In the end they may just end up using batteries, who knows.

It's a problem of discerning what is real and what isn't, not unlike the posts about life on mars on the space bbs.
