Re: Urban warfare tips from Israel

The "kiddie spies" are the most distressing part of the tips - and it is Americans general trust and warmth to children which got a CIA-op killed in Afghanistan.

Kids are deadly. Suicide as an admired profession only exists in the middle east. The kids aren't educated to know any better. No value of life. No fear of death. No remorse or compassion. Little "kiddy terminators"

Add pets/animals to the list too.

Pets are deadly.

"Here comes a friendly doggy...oh, he has a collar...c'mere doggy let's see who your owner is."

BOOM.

Remote triggered plastique dog collar. With a small microphone attached they can hear when the pooch-bomb has arrived at its target.

When in doubt keep the heck away from everything - and keep everything the heck away from you.

Best tip on streetfighting:

Don't do it. Bring your enemy to you. Naturally, in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict this is very difficult.

I don't agree with the avoiding sewers bit either. The sewers are a useful tool to deploy a decent amount of troops from one part of a city to another without getting picked off or held up by building sniperfire. It is easier to secure and hold a sewer than a street, and once you have secured the sewers in a region you can literally pop up anywhere you need to, avoiding that pesky sniper fire from buildings stuffed with women and children civilians.

If you don't control the sewers the enemy can also plant explosives underneath your troops and use them for sniper movements, etc. With all that methane gas the explosives effects are also magnified.

Naturally, it's a sh---- job - but with gas masks and special gear, its doable.

Right now I would imagine the maps and schematics of Baghdad are well known to the folks preparing for any streetfighting.

Architects documents, plumbing layout and sewers, telephone lines, microwave cell phone relay beacons, electrical transformers and lines are all mapped first... and then I would imagine...confirmed by human intelligence - HUMINT.

Saddam's greatest strength lies in what's underneath the ground in elaborate bunkers and tunnels. The back up generators, radar command centers, artillery stores, troops and NBC weapon stockpiles are all out of harms (our bombs) way.

It will be interesting to see what happens AFTER the elections.
