Brain Teaser

There are some seagulls and there are some pilings.

If the seagulls land on the pilings in pairs (two per piling), there will be one extra (empty) piling.

If each seagull lands so there is one seagull on each piling then there will be one extra seagull (still in the air).

How many seagulls and how many pilings are there?
