I have great respect for pacifists. People with little perception call them cowards, not realizing the guts it takes to stand protesting in front of a line of tanks or hostile soldiers unarmed, or to go to war without a gun, like many pacifists who have served their country as unarmed medics and the like.
That doesn't mean I think they're right, though.
At some point, refusing to use retaliatory violence becomes an immoral act in itself, empowering evil and penalizing the innocent.
