Re: Americans still haven't adopted metric

1. Full Employment. Every citizen has the right to work, free choice of employment, equal pay for equal work, just compensation and benefits consistent with human dignity and the right of bargaining for employment rights collectively in trade unions.

[I have no problem with this. Without a job you are homeless.]

2. Universal and Comprehensive Health Care. All citizens shall enjoy the right of accessible, equal high quality health care.

[I think only emergency health care and pharmaceutical minimums should be equal. If you want to visit a dentist that charges $2000 instead of $500 to remove a wisdom tooth, that's your problem. On the other hand if it is emergency surgery that's needed, then it should be free or have a standardized minimum fee applied nationwide, with financing options.]

3. Affordable Housing. All citizens shall enjoy the right to decent, safe, sanitary and affordable housing without discrimination.

[This definition isn't good enough. I've found that the quality of accommodation invariably depends on the quality of the neighbors' temperment. Ultimately you've got to decide if you like the neighbors well enough to stick around, and that's a matter of choice that can't be legislated.]

4. Quality Public Education. All citizens shall enjoy the right to a public education of equal high quality. It shall be free; it shall be compulsory; it shall be directed to the full development of the human personality.

[I agree with this up to the end of high school. After that it should be totally individual choice what career to choose. I suspect this requires no change whatsoever to the current system.]

5. Equality. Rights shall not be denied or abridged by any state or the nation on account of sex. (And I add: sexual orientation.)

[What about age, race, religion, blah blah. He seems to have left those out!]

6. Environment. All United States residents shall enjoy the right to a clean, safe and sustainable environment.

[This I totally agree with. A longer view needs to be worked into industrial development somehow. Sustainable energy for example is a real problem to solve. Sometime in the future oil will run out, and even if we believe supply & demand economy is self-correcting we still need options. Those options have to exist before they can be chosen by consumers.]

7. Fair taxes. The United States shall impose taxes progressively in proportion to an individual's income. (Washington State has the most regressive tax system in the USA for low and middle-income families. This is due to a regressive sales and property tax system and no progressive income tax system.)

[In Costa Rica you don't pay income tax until you make enough money to pay your rent and buy the essentials of life, after that it is progressive in proportion to your disposable income. Then again Costa Rica doesn't have an armed forces, or much of anything really.]

8. Voting Rights. All citizens shall have the right to vote. This right must be stated explicitly in the Federal constitution. Only states currently franchise voters. All national elections must adhere to national guidelines and standards.

[Isn't that already guaranteed? I'm confused.]

9. Foreign Policy. Rep. Jackson does not propose a foreign policy constitutional amendment, but he states: "...increasing economic justice and political democracy at home and abroad is the best way to assure that our national security interests will be protected now and in the future".

[Aha! The future is the object, isn't it! One must ask what that future might be, and answer honestly, stop the sci-fi fantasy, before we can create a policy that protects our future-based national security interests. Right? As far as the future is concerned I haven't seen too many honest analyses. In fact I've had a hell of a time sifting through all the garbage out there. I imagine your political representatives and mine are having similar problems.]
