The PBS special on the collapse of the WTC towers, the fires were essential to the collapse.

Surprisingly, though, they said the jet fuel was only like barbecue lighter fluid, igniting the buildings contents which provided most of the calories to weaken the steel. One of the buildings started to collapse because the contents were pushed to the opposite side from the impact, and were "stacked" and lit.

It makes sense. The buildings didn't collpase right away, and the jet fuel would have been burned away by the time they did.

Some people will have to discredit this because the experts in this program used a computer simulation, CAD-CAM and other 21st century tools. The visuals were spectacular, though, seeing how, the fasteners would have gone, and then the joists, and so on.

Flawed as it was by not showing the flames, etc.

What I've never found out is why a 47 story building next to these collapsed, too. Doesn't seem to be a reason. I know there is one, don't know what it is.
