The awareness that you ARE a fireplug is revealing. Though I suppose all the telltale signs were there - I kick myself - we should've been able to spot them!
Clearly they were obvious:

...flow freely once unplugged.
...spout off with incoherency until hosed.
...are often unappreciated.
