UNESCO

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a noble idea which had gone awry under the all too human element which infected the body and undermined it's primary goal of sharing scientific and educational materials.

One of my favorite publications which came out of UNESCO was the 1956 book YOU and the ATOM which covered an amazing amount of material and could put any third world nation on the right track to educate about atomic power and even the fundamental principles needed to develop nuclear reactors.

It is sad that I have to go that far back to find a truly beneficial publication.

Nowadays they teach women in some of the still barbaric African villages the basic concepts of cooking food before you eat it and how to work a stove - things of that nature.

Unfortunately there is too much politics in the process. Too many nations restrict the free exchange of even simple educational materials - much less documents which may describe democratic thinking or other cultures (such as the USA).

Yes, sixty millions seems very expensive. The UN is a bloated bureaucracy though - and each layer, when removed, reveals another layer underneath - much like an onion. If one could really see the full breakdown - probably 90% of that money flows into the hands of employees of UNESCO and "affiliated" companies which perform much footwork in the various region.

It was a political move to rejoin. Yet if one is not involved - one can have no positive influence on the UN educational machinery. Sometimes it's best to keep a close eye from the inside-out on those who often seek your downfall.
