Open Call for Award Nominees:
To submit nominees for any of the defined AndrewSullivan.com award categories, send an e-mail to andrew@andrewsullivan.com with "AWARD NOMINEE" in the "Subject" line. Please include a link to the original source material whenever possible.
THE SONTAG AWARD:
Nominees are solicited for statements by public figures uttered in the same spirit as Susan Sontag's post-9/11 preference for the "courage" of Islamist mass murderers as opposed to the "cowardice" of NATO air-pilots over the skies in Iraq. Glib moral equivalence in the war on terror and visceral anti-Americanism are qualities most admired by the judges in this category.
THE DERBYSHIRE AWARD:
Nominees are solicited for statements by public figures or writers that amount to right-wing hyperbole, hate-speech or manic paranoia. The award is in honor of one John Derbyshire, a paleo-conservative contributor to National Review Online, and provocative commentator on all things gay, black, female or sexual.
THE BEGALA AWARD:
Nominees are solicited for statements by public figures or writers that express an unusual felicity for lying, exaggerating or hyping news stories to buttress the Democratic party and any and all of its officials. Named after famed partisan Paul Begala, Begala Award judges look for vicious ad hominem attacks, outright lies, distortions or straight-faced propaganda with no concern for facts.
SCOWCROFT AWARD:
For grandstanding about the war on Iraq when you were completely wrong about the war in Afghanistan. Special points given for references to Vietnam.
POSEUR ALERT:
Shamelessly ripped off from the British satirical magazine Private Eye's "Pseud's Corner," this feature includes examples of the absurdly pretentious, pseudo-intellectual and massively self-regarding among the nation's intelligentsia (and beyond). Idiotic pop-star utterances are most welcome.
Maybe we should come up with our own set of awards (we already have the Moebius, theoretically), but I don't think I can come up with stuff this good.
