Re: And what exactly is freedom?

Americans are more free than Europeans?

Don't you have armies with commanders and soldiers, just like us?
Don't you have policemen in charge of making us respect the law, just like us?
We have to pay taxes for law, order, roads, safety, etc and don't you too?
I've got 40 days of vacation (well, generally it's 32), do you?
And separation of powers, isn't it a European Idea (the Greeks, then Locke and especially the frenchman Montesquieu)?

We acknowlege living in a part of the world much smaller than the entire planet, therefore we acknowledge the need for international laws, international treaties. Of course, those treaties can only be paramount if national laws or practices go against the recognized interest of other countries. But in the mean time, it's the international organization that takes the blame, as the ideal scapegoat.
Example (within the EU): Brussels is blamed by the French for being nitpicking about the way the Camembert cheese is composed; what the French don't seem to know is that the blame does not originate from the Brussels bureaucrats, but by the Greek farmers who want their cheese made this way and not imitated elsewhere. The greek farmers simply exert their right to keep their product as it was originally made.

The whole purpose of the UN is to avoid what lead to WWII and therefore this:
On a deep level, there comes a point where a nation must decide that its own interests are paramount, and that it cannot trust its own fate to the decisions of others who claim to be smarter and to have a higher wisdom. In acting this way, it will suffer consequences but sometimes the issues are worth it. It is true that what it does will affect others, but that is not an important consideration even if those others think it is.

But then, I wonder why it's just Europeans the US is after! How about the Canadians, Mexicans, Japanese, etc....?

I particularly noticed the way the author ends his article:
Fuck 'em. Vox populi, Vox Dei.
Which completely undermines his entire prose.
