A general rule of thumb I have for when I remember something is if I can't find ANY reference to it on the internet after a hard search, it was probably never anywhere but in my own head in the first place.
Even the looniest public ideas or theories have enough advocates out there to show up in abundance on the net.
As an example, a search for "Flight 800," "missile," and "eyewitness" pulls up over 90,000 hits, including numerous news interviews of those eyewitnesses. Whether the missile theory is accurate or not, your memory of eyewitness interviews is on much firmer ground.
