It may sound like a feeble plattitude, but it may be the best thing your company did for you. I've personally blossommed since being laid off by my erstwhile employer some 3 years ago.
The loss of a paycheck and the need to step down the economic ladder still hurt, but the opportunities are great. Nobody can force me to do things I don't want to, 'coz they aren't paying me to do what they want, any more!
Ride the wave, and fall gracefully when it throws you, then get up and paddle out for the next one...
