From the article:
The Constellation is a 41-year-old conventionally-powered carrier on its last cruise. The ship is scheduled for decommission next spring, in part because it’s too old to spend the money required to retrofit the “berthings” (sleeping cabins) and “heads” (bathrooms) for women. (Unlike newer carriers, this ship carries only a handful of women).
Admittedly, 41 years old is a long time for a warship. With age comes higher maintenance costs. Sooner or later, all ships reach the end of their useful life. However, if the only reason the Constellation is being decommissioned is because it can't be economically retrofitted to handle female crewmembers, then something stinks to high heaven. It'll cost several billion dollars to replace that carrier.
I don't mean to start a flame war on women in the military. Women have served honorably and capably in the military for decades. They make up some 10% of active duty personnel and, as a whole, are fully qualified for their duties. Still, taking out such an important asset as the Constellation because it can't be retrofitted to handle women sounds very foolish. Ok, so this ship can't handle many female crewmembers. Assign them to other ships and keep the Constellation in service until it's no longer capable of providing useful service.

Is this a price for political correctness?
