<Ballard Corporation, a fine Canadian company, has been selling catalyst equipped fuel cells for years. They also sell other critical components like power regulators and electric motors for vehicles ranging from airport tugs through city buses. These cells use a catalyst to split the hydrogen from a range of fuels like alcohols, gasoline, and natural gas. They even have a methanol fuel cell that doesn't need a catalyst to extract the hydrogen. All of those fuels are produced and distributed today and none require exotic storage technology.
As for pure hydrogen fuel cells, they're further in the future because of production, infrastructure and storage issues. None of those issues are insurmountable but each represents challenges.
