Re: I think fuel cells that use ethanol are the ones with a future

From what I've read, direct liquid methanol fuel cells can also use ethanol as a fuel. But I prefer ethanol because it can be made in large quantities from biomass.

Any fuel cell that rely on storage of hydrogen such as compressed gas cylinders, sodium borohydride, metal hydrides, etc, are never going to work because the storage containers weigh 10 - 20 times more than the fuel inside them. This extra weight eliminates cargo capacity, reduces range, and increases fuel consumption. In contrast featherweight plastic containers will store gallons of liquid fuels like ethanol. There is no need for a heavy container that will detract from any gains in fuel efficiency from the fuel cell.

Also, any fuel cell that requires hydrogen to be manufactured from petroleum, or other fossil fuels is just prolonging the inevitable. And hydrogen manufactured by electrolysis is certain to cause a massive increase in energy consumption, simply because the process is less than 100 percent efficient, and would require a central power source like nuclear or diesel electric generators. It wouldn't accomplish anything.
