This is a pretty funny op-ed piece from Australia:
WAR is not the answer, according to a T-shirt worn by Sheryl Crow at Monday night's American Music Awards. As a statement of political values, the singer's shirt recalls her earlier feminist commentary: All I Wanna Do is Have Some Fun. This chick is one deep thinker.
So is Natasha Stott Despoja, who last year demonstrated her solidarity with the Muslim sisterhood by donning a veil. After the Taliban was ousted, women in Afghanistan burned their burkas; in the West, feminists put them on. Former undergarment incineratrix Germaine Greer urged women to wear burkas to protest against a war with Iraq.
Which, in the context of the cultural war being played out in the background of a likely military conflict, is like celebrating freedom by chaining yourself to a Saudi prince. Feminism is a Western cultural achievement. Many feminists – being of a mind-set that holds the materialistic, capitalist West in contempt – have a problem with this. It puts them on the same team as the wicked Western imperialists.
Thus the silence from Western feminists on Muslim treatment of women. "Feminists refused to touch this subject," writes Kay S. Hymowitz in New York's City Journal. "They have averted their eyes from the harsh, blatant oppression of millions of women, even while they have continued to stare into the Western patriarchal abyss, indignant over female executives who cannot join an exclusive golf club and college women who do not have their own lacrosse teams."
Little wonder that nobody listens to these conflicted cranks, who still insist that women are naturally inclined towards peace regardless of provocation. Recent US polls show women are more in favour of committing ground troops to Iraq than are men. Younger women are especially hawkish: a CNN poll found that 65 per cent of women aged below 49 supported ground troops.
Today's feminist icon isn't sensitive Natasha or peacenik Sheryl. It's US national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, who has called for a "march of freedom in the Muslim world". Marching for freedom in the West is internet commentator Shell Shocking, author of a modern feminist call to arms: "In a post 9/11 world, I feel it's my duty as a woman to wear clingier clothing, flirt more outrageously, have more orgasms and get on top more often. In short, anything that's taboo to the Islamofascists."
All she wants to do is have some fun. Feminism's old guard – and extreme Islam – would prefer that she didn't.
