Bananas
Banana leaves and fruiting stem (raceme) grow from the underground rhizome's (or pseudobulb's) top surface and the roots grow from the lower surface of the rhizome. The fleshy stems sheathed with huge broad leaves can grow to 5 to 35 feet in as little as 1 year, depending on variety and growing environment. Each pseudostem produces one flower cluster, which develops fruit, then dies. In addition each parent banana plant will produce as many as 10 suckers during its life cycle, which grow into new plants. New pseudostems then grow from the rhizomes.

I have one of these and I've given away some of the pseudostems. One of those that I gave away is bigger than mine now. In the four years we've owned our banana tree/palm, it hasn't given us fruit.... yet. It gives off a banana scent when you trim the leaves though.
