Another thought.
The fender mirrors might eliminate the "blind spot" in the area right along side the car which door mounted mirrors have.
With those mirrors either you'd see 'em in the mirror or your peripheral vision without turning your head. With door mirrors there's an area in which it's difficult to see without turning.
