Your logic seems correct. It does look like less of a turn of the head to take a glance behind you. I wonder if the location is required by some regulation? I would think they could make it less intrusive and be more a part of the car design than just sticking them there like that, and would certainly need to be adjustable by the driver from within the car.
Why isn't it done that way in the US?
